Abby Red Survive the Deluge

The Peewee AA Abby Red Angels opened their 2014 Spring Season with a game in Chilliwack. It seemed unlikely that the game would happen as the weather was dreadful.  However, the coaches and umpires decided to forge ahead. The players on both teams fought gamely through the rain and mud.  Sadly, neither team could really show what they were capable of because of the conditions.

The top of the Abby order went down 1,2,3 to start the game. Chilliwack took advantage of the slippery ball and some suspect defence to take a 3-0 lead. However, Red got into the game in the 2nd inning, using good baserunning to close the gap to 2-3.  From there the Abby defence was much more solid and held the ‘Wack to only one more run.  Red was able to get baserunners on and continued to add to their lead, finishing with an 8-4 score.

Highlights of the game included a key out at home on a throw from Kole Jessamine at Second Base, while Logan McDonald made a nice catch in Centre to help squash a late rally from the opposition. Josh Siemens was solid on the mound, as was David Draayers who survived some early jitters to settle in nicely.   At the plate the Abby hitters were fairly quiet, with not a lot of good pitches to swing at, but they managed to work the counts to get on base.  Both Conall Sexton and Tyler Nelson were 1.000 getting On-Base, while Max Mazstalar delivered a solid 2 RBI single.

The real highlight of the game was the battle for muddiest uniform between Tyler, whose jersey is usually pristine, and Conall, who is always a disaster. It was a pretty close call this time around.
