The Angels led 3-1 heading into the top of the 7th and final inning at Berry Park. They were three outs away from taking the Spring Championship in Peewee AA Tier 2. Then the wheels fell off, as North Delta capitalized on Abby errors to come from behind and take a 4-3 lead. The Abbotsford bats went quietly in the bottom of the 7th and that was that.

It was an agonizing way to close out the spring season for the AbbyRed who looked to be ready to take the Championship.

Conall Sexton had started on the mound for the Angels and pitched another gem of a game. For the second straight game he threw to the pitch count limit , deep into the 6th inning.  Along the way he gave up just one run, no walks and struck out 13.  He exited the game with his team in the driver’s seat, ahead 3-1.

Credit goes to the North Delta pitchers for keeping their team in touch. All Abby could muster through 7 innings was 3 runs.  This included one in the 2nd inning, which came after Conall led off with a triple and came into score on a hit from Max Mazstalar. In the 4th inning Logan McDonald led off with a single.  He and Jordan Epp would score on a double from Max, who collected his 3rd RBI.  But that was all the Red batting order could muster.

Tyler Nelson took over the mound to finish off the 6th and was charged with closing the game in the 7th.  Tyler pitched well, but the North Delta bats found some holes in the Abby defence.  Mistakes began to lead to mistakes. As things began to unravel the errors multiplied and the lead evaporated.

In some ways the game was a representation of the entire spring for Abby Red.  A times the team played some outstanding baseball and looked like they belonged in the elite of the league. But too often the team failed to live up to that promise.  Inconsistency at the plate and the tendency towards costly errors in the field led to disappointing results.

Despite the losses, there are other rewards that come from playing ball. The coaches really enjoyed working with the boys on this team. There are a lot of characters on the squad, and the players seemed to really enjoy each other.  Players and coaches alike had a lot of fun with this team this spring. The coaches wish all the best to the players as they head off to represent Abbotsford in AAA or AA for the summer.
