Abbotsford Hitters Huge at Home
A damp Sunday morning brought out our Abbotsford Mini-Mosquito team to face the Newton Yankees at Lions Park for a Noon game. In the one previous match up in Newton, our Abbotsford squad fell 20-12 and we were hungry to get that one back. Solid defensive play held Newton to only two runs in the first inning, but they found their bats in the second and third frames by scoring the maximum eight runs in those innings.
Abbotsford started off with strong bats in the first inning as Breandan McLaughlin and Jamison Ladd hit home Chase Coleman and Jonah Barr who each walked to first base. We maxed out our four run limit with another solid Home Run by Liam Fillinger, his second dinger this summer. When the Newton bats got hot, the Abbotsford bats went cold as Newton kept your Angels down to only one run in the second through fourth innings.
Heading into the fifth, Abbotsford pitcher Theo Manuel shut down the Newton squad to get the team fired up and ready to rally.
Abbotsford scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth sending the game into the sixth and final inning with your Abbotsford Angels trailing 10-7.
Newton faced Abbotsford closer Ryan Ortis who held them to three runs in the open inning and then the Abbotsford Boys grabbed their bats and got a rally started.
Chase “Bones” Coleman was the first batter who reached first base after taking a pitch to the helmet. The next two Abbotsford batters walked, loading the bases.
Jamison Ladd made a nice hit and the smart base running by Abbotsford led to a series of over-throws and three runners scoring on that play. After that we had great bats going which brought in runs by Liam Fillinger, Ryan Ortis and Theo Manuel giving the Win to your Abbotsford Angels.
Next game is in Chilliwack on Tuesday night as we try to build on our 2-1 lead in that series.
