Peewee “A” Information
The following information is for Players (and Parents) interested in Peewee “A” summer ball tryouts, from Head Coach Ernie Wiens:
Hello Parents and players:
It’s that time again where we start preparing for the Summer Ball teams.
I’m Ernie Wiens, and have been selected to be the Peewee A summer coach this year. For those of you who don’t know me, I have coached my son Josh since T-Ball and head coached 2 – Mosquito teams and this year’s Abby #2 Peewee team. I hold a NCCP Regionally trained coaching certificate and have attended this year’s Coaching Conference, to keep current with coaching techniques and drills.
This year’s Peewee A tryouts will be held at 6:00 pm, June 10th and 12th at Crossley Field. I have asked to have an evaluator from Peewee AA and AAA out to assist in this year’s team selection, and due to playoff schedules not yet determined, needs to be finalized. I believe this evaluation process gives transparency and helps reduce the burden on me. With that said, the summer baseball expectations and schedule is set by the head coach and is as follows.
Schedule:
– Evaluations – June 10 & 12th
– Team selection will happen after the Peewee A wrap up tournament to not interfere or diminish Spring baseball – June 15th
– Practices will be 4 times a week for the remainder of June and will be reduced to 2 or 3+ Batting cage time when the game schedule is released.
– First tournament yet to be confirmed is Ridge Meadows July 3rd-6th
– Second tournament is confirmed – Kelowna July 11-13th
– Third tournament yet to be confirmed is Burnaby July 18 – 20th
– If we qualify for provincials they take place Aug 7-11th.
– After that say Hello to the life you left behind June 15th – J
Expectations:
– Please review the schedule carefully, as it is a large time commitment.
– The league fees are $ 215 per player and as a team we will need to fund raise approx. $1,200.00 to $1,800.00 for tournaments and if wanted ( team vote) additional team apparel.
– Player attitude, athletic ability and mental toughness are characteristics that are important to me. I believe failure with composure is something that baseball can and should teach young players. But keeping in mind I will expect players to train hard, and be ready to compete for Abbotsford. I will be giving homework for arm care and base stealing drills to avoid injury and increase athletic ability. I will ask the parents to monitor and encourage the players with the home work.
– The practices will be approx. 2 hrs long, and I will require parents to assist in the field set-up before and after games/practices. Summer ball is not a drop and run summer camp.
– Player positions will be determined by the coaches, and I ask for parent patience and support. If your player hears the parent not agreeing with coaches decisions they will not commit and the team will not “Gel” or work well as a unit. Please approach me before or after a game or practice to discuss, if you have concerns. I’m very approachable, most of the time. J
– Please send your player to games/practices properly equipped, rested, good nutrition and with water & a snack (if needed) for half way through a 2-3 hr game. Success begins with preparation.
I believe Baseball is a great sport that will teach young players confidence, composure & focus without them even realizing it. Less time on the couch is better for coaches too!
