No Medals But Good Experience at BC Summer Games
The BC Summer Games was a positive experience for the Abbotsford Angels, despite producing no medals for the 15U baseball players.
The Fraser Valley team had a great start to the tournament, going 3 and 0 in pool play, including opening the tourney with an exciting 4-3 win in extra innings over Vancouver Island / Central Coast.. Conall Sexton came in to pitch in the 5th and had to take the team through the 9th inning, including two innings of International Tiebreaker in which the batting team starts with runners at 1st and 2nd. From there the Valley took wins over Fraser River and Vancouver Coastal.
The Semifinal turned out to be a heart breaker. Kevin Kim was outstanding in 6 strong innings on the mound. However, the Vancouver Island pitchers kept the Valley bats at bay, while Vancouver Island produced the only run of the game, taking the win, 1-0. With their hope for Gold squashed, the boys would finish with no medals at all, as they fell behind early in the Bronze Medal game and lost 9-5 to the Fraser River zone.
Meanwhile the Fraser Valley “A” squad battled hard, but missed out on the playoff round after going 1-2 in pool play. Despite the mixed results in terms of wins and losses, the BC Games were a great experience for the Angels on both teams. The boys bonded quickly with team-mates from Chilliwack and Aldergrove. They also enjoyed the chance to mix with baseball players and other athletes from around the province.
[notice]Angels Bantam AA player Riley Hall also took part in the games, running for the Fraser Valley. He set personal bests as he ran to 4th place finishes in the 2000m and the 1200m Steeplechase. [/notice]
