Mixed Day for Minis
It was a mixed day for the Abby Red Mini Mosquito Angels as they won one and lost one at the Ridge Meadows Rup-Dog Tournament. In the morning the boys came out on the short end of a 7-4 score with Vancouver.
Mattias Meleg pitched two good innings to open the game and earn MVP honours. Jimmy Boulanger was strong in the field and also earned plaudits from the opposing coaches. Unfortunately, the Angels couldn’t get their bats going enough to support the good defensive work and fell to 0-2 for the tournament.
After some lunch, waterpark, pool and other summer fun, you might think the boys would be worn out, but in fact they came out strong on the bats and in the field as they took on the host Ridge Meadows Royals. Trey Gairdner was a force, giving up only one run through three innings of work on the mound. Highlighted by a 2 run double by Bryn Alexander, the Angels bats maxed out each inning, giving a the team a comfortable 12-1 lead going into the open inning. Ronan Sexton picked up where Trey left off, striking out two Ridge batters. He was one pitch away from ending the game, but a foul ball took him to his pitch count limit. What followed was an exercise in damage control as the Abby pitchers walked in 8 runs before mercifully getting the final out to end the game and lower the blood pressure of the coaches and supporters! With a couple of good hits from the leadoff spot, Tyne Alexander was picked as MVP of the game. With 1 win and 2 losses, the team finished 3rd in the pool and will play in a consolation playoff on Sunday
