Abby Red Continue Up and Down Season

It has been an up and down season for the Abbotsford Angels “Red” Peewee AA team. That was certainly evident during the last week:

Abby Red Angels 4
Cloverdale Red Spurs 3

It is always an exciting matchup when the Angels take on their perennial rivals from Cloverdale. On Tuesday night at Berry Park, Conall Sexton started on the hill for Abby Red, and pitched well against strong Cloverdale bats, giving up just 2 hits through 4 innings. However, a couple of unearned runs, and quiet Abby bats, led to a 3-0 Cloverdale lead.  Tyler Nelson came in for the 5th, and pitched his best game of the year, shutting the door and giving Abby a chance to come back.  They took that chance in a big way in the 6th inning. Hunter Klassen got things going with a single to Right.  Cole Kinney and Logan McDonald then got on to load the bases. Jordan Epp, who continues to get better and better as the season has gone on, drove in a run on a hard single.  Conall Sexton then hit a shot deep over the Centre Fielder’s head for a triple.  That scored two runs to give Abby the lead. Tyler shut the door in the 7th to seal the deal, and take home a well deserved Pita Pit Player of the Game Award.

Abby Red Angels 3
Coquitlam-Moody Reds 1

“Winning ugly” is an overused cliché, but that is exactly what Abby Red did in Coquitlam on Thursday. Abby got some great pitching from Big Kole Jessamine and Gage Goncalves, who made his first pitching appearance of the season.  The defence was solid behind them, and CoMo was never much of a threat.  However, the Abby offence was anemic and could only generate 3 runs.  The boys looked lethargic and uninterested for stretches of the game. The Abbotsford supporters who made the long drive across the bridge didn’t get much of a show, but the team did earn the W.  David Draayers earned the Pita Pit Player of the Game award.

Vancouver Community Mounties 5

After coming back to win on Tuesday, the tables were turned on Saturday, as Abby Red blew a 2-0 lead heading into the 7th inning.  Max Masztalar on the mound was great through 5 innings, earning a Pita PIt Player of the Game Award. The defence was solid behind him, and together they kept Abby in the driver’s seat despite some quiet bats. Logan Macdonald was solid in the 6th and things looked good as the 7th got started.  In fact, Abby Red was just one out away from victory.  However, an error on a fly ball gave Vancouver life, and they seized it, tying up the game and forcing an extra inning. In the 8th, Vancouver put the dagger in, scoring three to take the lead. In the bottom of the 8th Red was able to muster a run, but that was it.  In the end, it was a heartbreaking 5-3 loss.
