Mini Mosquito Derby: Red Takes Bragging Rights

The Consolation Final of the Rup-Dog Classic Mini Mosquito Tournament in Ridge Meadows saw the two Abbotsford entries face each other for the first time this season.

Abby Black won the coin flip and took the home bench, so Quenton Kobes took the mound to face the Abby Red hitters. Red jumped out to an early 4-0 lead.  Red starting pitcher Ronan Sexton then took the mound and shut down the Black attack with two K’s.  Ronan was also supported by some superb defense, including a brilliant play from catcher Trey Gairdner as he scooped up a little roller in front of the plate and threw a strike to first base to get the runner at one.

The next inning saw Red rack up another 4 runs.  In the bottom half Sexton continued to throw hard but had to battle through some  adversity, as Black scored an unearned run after Red tried chasing Black base runners and eventually threw the ball away. Sexton added two more K’s to end the inning with just one run scored.

The Abby bats piled on another 3 runs in the 3rd inning.  Bryn Alexander took the mound for Abbotsford in the bottom half and gave up just one run, knocked in on a big hit by Quenton Kobes. Heading into the 4th and final inning, Red led 11-2. They added one more run as Brendan McLaughlin launched a bomb to deep centre field. Ronan came in to score, but Brendan tried to stretch his triple into a homer. A perfect series of throws from centerfield to the cutoff man to the plate got Brendan at home. He was crushed at not scoring, but should have been pleased with another booming hit that scored a run. It was a great play by Black to end the inning.

Down by 10, the Black batters came up with one last chance, but Red closer Jimmy Boulanger would have none of it. He threw out a runner on an easy 1-3 ground out, and added 2 strikeouts to finish off the affair. Abby Red took the first Derby of the season, 12-2 over Abby Black.

Ronan Sexton was selected as the MVP for Red, while Logan Van Putten took MVP honours for Black. The teams meet again on July 18, 6:30 at Lions Park. Mark it on your calendars!
